I Made a Myth-take

"I can't believe you let that thing in," said Damocles, shaking his head beside me.

"What?" I asked, shrugging. "I see a horse, and I have to pet it!"

"It was fifty feet high and made of wood!" he shouted. "At best you'd get a splinter for petting it, at worst you get a hundred Greeks springing from it in the middle of the night and completely sacking Troy!"

"Hey!" A shout, and a whistling sound later, an arrow embedded itself in the wall between our heads. "I'd pipe down if I were you!"

"Sorry to disturb your reveling, sir!" I called back to the guard with a little wave of my hand. I would have waved more, but the shackles made it difficult.

"Yes, wouldn't want to distract you from the pleasures of our kingdom that you've decided to take for yourselves!" my cellmate said with a bite of sarcasm.

The guard shouldered his bow and stepped inside the bars. He got in Damocles' face. "You want to say that again?"

"You're thieves and murderers, you swine, now get -" Damocles was cut off by a blow to his jaw as the guard rose to his bait, and he spit a bloody tooth at him. "Have that too, on the house!"

The guard kicked him in the gut, then looked at me. "You got anything to add, sunshine?"

I shook my head as Damocles wheezed next to me, still drooling blood out of his mouth. The guard snorted and spat at my feet. He turned to walk out of the cell, making sure to kick Damocles in the shins as he did so.

"Now, how are we going to get out of here?" I whispered when the guard had wandered off to get more drink.

He looked at me and grinned, still dripping red and now with a hole in mouth. "Maybe we can build a big wooden badger, hide in it, and they'll want to release it into the wild!" he said with a slap to my hand. "Get your head out of your ass. We're not going anywhere."

I shut up. For a moment. "Do you want to sing a song?"

"No, I don't want to sing a song!"

A few minutes passed.

"I do like badgers. They're excellent at finding things."

"Oh shut up."

Thanks to Thomas, Kelsey, Denise, Chuck, Ryan, Frederich, James, Peter, Beverly, and Karen for their submissions.

For some of my longer works (read: NaNoWriMo story from a few years ago), here's a link to my fanfiction.net profile, with a trilogy based around Pandora's Box, with a good bit of Doctor Who thrown in, along with a couple of surprises that really aren't that surprising, coming from me:

https://www.fanfiction.net/u/5372471/cantkeepmymusictomyself

The page orders it oddly, but the first part is Sentence, then Escape, then Redemption. Together, they make Pandora's Prison. To be fair, I did write them out of order. I'd love some reviews on them, but do take your time, they are over 50,000 words a piece.

For next week, I want to know what you stockpile because you are afraid to go without it. Post your submissions in the comments section below, and take a moment to subscribe to the page.
