“You know, this is all your fault,” said Sonia for the dozenth time, scowling at Matthew.
“What was I supposed to do, just let you go?” he asked incredulously. “I’m the only reason you’re still in one piece!” He winced. That was a poor choice of words, he thought, looking between them at their sides.
She turned her head fully to glare at him. “I didn’t want to share the piece with you!” she snarled, and gestured with her opposite hand at their torsos, now fused together at the side. “If you didn’t have to show off with that stupid surfboard during a hurricane, I wouldn’t have got caught in the undertow trying to save your sorry behind when you wiped out.”
“And then I had to save you, sacrificing my board to do so,” Matthew countered. “Who knows where it is now? And for your information,” he added, “it was just a tropical storm.”
Sonia raised her eyebrows at him. “Well, excuse me, Mr. Smarty Pants! Even though 65 mile per hour winds aren’t quite enough to rate hurricane status, they forgot to tell the tropical storm to take it easy on us. Specifically the fact that it should have left out the thunder and lightning!”
Matthew’s ears burned. “Hey, it’s not my fault we got struck by lightning,” he said. “How was I supposed to know that it would the bolt would go right through the dock above us?”
“You’re the one who was holding on to the dock itself. When it hit the dock it passed through straight to us, causing this.” Sonia finished with another frustrated flourish at their fused forms.
“I was only holding onto the dock so we wouldn’t get blown away by the hurricane,” he muttered.
“I thought it was a tropical storm,” she retorted.
They stopped bickering as the nurse came in. “Oh good, you’re awake,” she said. “You’re both extremely lucky to be alive. Lightning strikes can be fatal in the best conditions, and with both of you wet, and no grounding material on you, it’s amazing that you managed to come through in one piece.” The nurse somehow managed to keep a straight face as she said this.
Matthew shook his head. “Not the time for it,” he said to her.
“Well,” said the nurse, frowning at them both. “It’s going to take some time, but we do have a highly skilled surgeon on staff here that will be able to separate you, and you can go your separate ways from there.”
Sonia snorted. “I wish I had thought about that before I said yes,” she said, holding up her left hand to show the nurse the simple diamond ring on her third finger. She turned to look at Matthew and, smirking slightly, kissed him. “I’m stuck with you either way,” she said.
Not my best or longest work, I'm sure, though given the challenge I received from my devoted readers, it's amazing I was able to crank out anything at all! Special thanks to Celia Hall-Castro for the inspiration of this week's entry.
